Kailashahar tense as youth injured in alleged BSF firing

Kailashahar, Sept 19:
A dramatic incident on Friday morning at Maguruli, a village near the India–Bangladesh border in Kailashahar, has sparked widespread concern and controversy after a 28-year-old local youth was critically injured in an alleged Border Security Force (BSF) firing.

The victim, identified as Nurul Islam, was reportedly shot around 7:00 am when BSF personnel allegedly entered his residence without provocation and opened fire. A bullet struck him in the neck, leading to chaos in the area. Locals rushed him to Unakoti District Hospital, where he was treated by Dr. Mayuri Pal and ENT specialist Dr. Arup Chakraborty.

“Nurul Islam was brought in around 8:00 am with a gunshot wound to the neck. After emergency treatment, he was referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for advanced care,” Dr. Chakraborty informed.

Family members, however, accused authorities of negligence, alleging that the delayed arrival of a government ambulance worsened his condition. The incident has left the community tense, with villagers demanding justice and accountability.

Meanwhile, BSF officials presented a contrasting version of events. A source claimed that Nurul Islam, also known locally as Raju, was involved in smuggling activities along the border. According to the BSF, he had been provoking personnel by filming them and behaving aggressively despite repeated warnings. They allege that the firing was a last-resort measure to control an escalating situation.

The conflicting narratives have fueled panic in the border region, where residents are calling for an impartial probe into the incident. Political observers note that the matter may snowball into a larger issue of civilian safety and security in sensitive border zones.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
