Kumarghat, August 2: The Government Teacher Training College at Kumarghat continues to face significant infrastructure deficiencies, hostel-related problems and a shortage of support staff, affecting the institution’s day-to-day functioning. College Principal Dr. Nibas Chandra Shil has appealed for immediate government intervention to address the long-pending issues and strengthen the institution’s academic environment.

Established in 2015 with the objective of preparing qualified teachers for the state’s education system, the college has emerged as an important teacher training institution in Tripura. However, despite completing more than a decade of operation, several basic infrastructural and administrative challenges remain unresolved.

Speaking on the condition of the college, Dr. Shil said nearly 350 students are admitted every year, while the institution has 17 teaching faculty members. Although office staff are available, the existing workforce is inadequate to handle growing administrative responsibilities. He stressed the need for additional non-teaching staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution.

Hostel facilities remain one of the most pressing concerns. The boys’ hostel has accommodation for 80 to 100 students, whereas the girls’ hostel can house only 60 to 65 students. With the number of female students increasing steadily each year, the existing hostel has become overcrowded, forcing many students to adjust in limited space due to a shortage of beds.

The principal also highlighted recurring drinking water shortages in both hostels during prolonged power cuts or load-shedding. As the water supply system depends on electricity, students are often left without adequate drinking water whenever power disruptions occur.

Another longstanding issue is the absence of a government-appointed hostel warden. Since the college was established, no permanent warden has been posted. As a result, two women faculty members have been managing hostel affairs in addition to their regular teaching responsibilities, placing an extra burden on academic staff.

Dr. Shil urged the state government to take immediate steps to upgrade the college’s infrastructure by expanding hostel capacity, improving essential amenities, strengthening administrative support with additional non-teaching staff and creating permanent hostel warden posts. He expressed confidence that these measures would significantly improve the quality of teacher education and provide a better learning environment for aspiring teachers.
