Tokyo, Dec 5: India’s Ambassador-designate to Japan, Nagma M. Mallick, met Japan’s Minister of Environment, Ishihara Hirotaka, on Friday to discuss new avenues of collaboration between the two countries. The meeting, highlighted by the Indian Embassy in Japan on X, focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in environmental initiatives and emerging sectors.

Mallick has been actively engaging with academic and scientific communities since December 1, when she delivered a video message at the 16th Indian Scientists Association Japan (ISAJ) Symposium at the Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology (SIST). In her address, she emphasized the expanding potential for India–Japan cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. The event featured keynote remarks from ISAJ President Dr. Sunil Kaul and SIST President Dr. Masakazu Kimura, with the two-day symposium centering on the theme “Circular Innovation for Urban Transformation and Beyond.”

In parallel diplomatic outreach, India’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Japan, R. Madhu Sudan, represented New Delhi at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at Gifu Women’s University. Delivering remarks alongside Japan’s Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, he highlighted the depth of India–Japan relations and the significant opportunities they hold for the future. The Indian Embassy noted that he underscored achievements across cultural, academic, and strategic domains.

These engagements align with ongoing efforts by both nations to enhance bilateral ties, following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi on November 23 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in defence, talent mobility, innovation, and trade. PM Modi described the meeting as “productive” and stressed that a strong India–Japan partnership is vital for global progress.

With continued high-level exchanges and institutional collaborations, India and Japan are poised to deepen their strategic partnership across key developmental and technological sectors.
