Agartala, July 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow to orange rainfall alerts across Tripura, forecasting widespread light to moderate showers with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the next 48 hours. The downpour is attributed to a persistent low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and an active monsoon trough.

According to the IMD Agartala Centre, South Tripura is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall, with isolated areas likely to witness over 21 cm. Districts like Gomati, Sepahijala, and West Tripura may receive 7–20 cm of rainfall, while other regions are expected to see moderate to heavy showers. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in isolated pockets.

Rainfall has already begun impacting daily life. In the past 24 hours, Belonia recorded 27 cm and Bagafa 13 cm of rain. Urban flooding, traffic disruptions, tourist site closures, and crop and infrastructure damage have emerged as key concerns. Vulnerable areas include Agartala, Udaipur, Kamalasagar, and Sabroom.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during intense spells, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow official advisories. Emergency teams have been placed on high alert.

Heavy rainfall since Monday night has particularly affected areas in South Tripura, Sepahijala, and Gomati districts. River levels are rising rapidly, prompting the administration to issue alerts and urge residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer ground.

In Sabroom, 72 mm of rainfall was recorded until 8 AM on Tuesday, with projections suggesting totals may reach 120 mm by night. Officials warn the Feni river’s water level could rise further if the rain persists.

Belonia, Udaipur, Jolaibari, and Sonamura are experiencing rising water levels, with flood-like conditions emerging in several low-lying zones as the rain continues unabated.
