waves across Tripura, a 52-year-old school teacher in Gomati district allegedly killed his wife and son before attempting to take his own life, police said on Monday.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Udaipur, Debanjali Ray, the accused, Ajit Das, a government school science teacher, reportedly attacked his wife Rupa Das (45) and their son Diganta Das (18) with a bamboo staff while they were asleep early in the morning. Both victims died on the spot.
Following the incident, Das allegedly attempted suicide by consuming pesticide. He was rushed to Gomati District Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, hospital sources confirmed. The incident took place at Beltoli under the Radha Kishore Pur police station.
Local residents rushed to the house after hearing screams, but by the time they arrived, both victims had succumbed to their injuries. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Preliminary inputs from family members suggest that the accused had been experiencing mental health issues in recent days.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the Udaipur subdivision, located about 65 km from Agartala. Diganta Das was reportedly an engineering student at a private university in Agartala.
In a separate incident, concerns over safety in educational institutions have intensified after a female teacher was allegedly assaulted at Umakanta Government English Medium School in Agartala. The accused is reportedly a former teacher of the same institution, though no action has yet been taken.
Reacting to the assault, members of the All India Working Women’s Coordination Committee met education officials, demanding immediate action and stronger safety measures for teachers across the state.
