Agartala, December 7:
Tripura achieved a historic milestone in its sporting landscape on Sunday as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the GFI Bharat Golf Mahotsav at the Tusker BSF Golf Course in Salbagan, marking the first national-level golf tournament ever hosted in the state.
Jointly organised by the Tripura Golf Association and the BSF Golf Club, Agartala, the event signifies a major advancement in Tripura’s sports development. Describing the occasion as a moment of pride, Dr. Saha said his government is committed to extending all necessary support to strengthen golf infrastructure and promote the sport among the youth. He also highlighted golf as an effective means to engage young people positively and help combat drug abuse.
The Chief Minister noted that the proposed plan to develop a full-fledged golf course in the state would not only uplift the sports ecosystem but also boost eco-tourism, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the goal of building a “Nasha Mukt Tripura.”
The inauguration was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, IG BSF (Tripura Frontier) Aloke Kumar Chakraborty, Golf Federation of India (GFI) General Secretary Ariyaveer Arya, and Tripura Golf Association president Devid Debbarma.
Speaking at the event, Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the rapid expansion of sports infrastructure across Tripura under the leadership of Dr. Saha, himself a sports enthusiast. He added that his department is planning to develop additional golf courses in the state, identifying Jampui Hills as a particularly promising location.
IG Chakraborty emphasised that Tripura’s natural terrain is highly suitable for golf and observed that cities with golf facilities often experience growth in hospitality, transportation and real estate sectors. He said luxury tourism linked to golf has the potential to further uplift local handicrafts and indigenous products.
Following the inauguration, Dr. Saha toured the expansive course along with the IG and the Sports Minister.
GFI General Secretary Arya informed that the Bharat Golf Mahotsav — part of the GFI Tour 2025 — began on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, and will conclude on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
