Floods Disrupt Education Sector in State

Agartala: August 25: The recent floods have significantly disrupted the education sector in the state, according to officials from the School Education Department and Higher Education Department. At a press conference held in the secretariat on Sunday, N.C. Sharma, the director of the School Education Department, reported that school infrastructure in various districts, excluding Udaipur and Amarpur subdivisions, has suffered damages amounting to approximately 11 crore rupees. Notably, Jagaram Para SB School and Ganamukta Para JB School in the Satchan block of South District have completely collapsed.

Temporary camps have been established in 239 schools, currently housing a large number of displaced individuals. Many schools have been inundated, with classrooms filled with silt and mud. District Education Officers have been instructed to clean up the affected schools. Additionally, 209 schools have sustained various degrees of damage. Around 12,000 students’ books and notebooks have been reported damaged, which will be replaced through the SCERT. The reopening of schools is under review, as many are still serving as relief camps and require cleaning to prevent health issues among students.

Officials from the Higher Education Department reported that a 100-meter long wall of Bilonia Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar College has been damaged. Internal roads of Mohanpur Swami Vivekananda College and some books in the Baghafa and Bilonia libraries have also been affected. University exams scheduled for August 21st have been postponed. Two temporary camps have been set up in colleges to address the flood situation. The employees of the Higher Education Department have actively participated in relief efforts. The director of the SCERT was also present at the press conference.
