Agartala, May 28: Expressing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the BJP-led government in Tripura, several political leaders and their families from the Boxanagar assembly constituency joined the Indian National Congress on Wednesday. Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Asish Kumar Saha welcomed them at a programme held at the Congress headquarters in Agartala.

A total of 17 voters from five families formally joined the Congress, symbolizing a growing discontent with the current state government. Among the new entrants were Dilawar Hossain and Mahabul Hossain from the CPI(M), and Shiraj Miya, Abdul Haque, and Abu Hemal from the BJP. TPCC president Saha personally handed over the party flags to the new members, marking their inclusion into the Congress fold.

Speaking to the media, Saha said the BJP-led government has failed to meet the expectations of the people and accused it of divisive politics, failing to uphold national interests, and favoring corporate entities at the cost of the poor and farmers. “People are gradually realizing that Congress is the only credible alternative that can fight for the demands of the common masses,” he asserted.

He also launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s administration, accusing it of poor governance, deteriorating law and order, and misleading the public with exaggerated claims of development.

Senior Congress leaders present at the event expressed confidence that the new members would actively work with the party to strengthen its presence in the state while upholding the party’s democratic and secular values.

The development is seen as part of Congress’s broader efforts to regain political ground in Tripura by tapping into public discontent and welcoming leaders disillusioned with the BJP and CPI(M).
