Dharmanagar, Oct 23: While Dharmanagar was aglow with Diwali celebrations on Wednesday night, darkness struck in a different form when a senior official of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) was attacked by a miscreant while on duty.
The incident occurred around midnight near the “Amra Sobai Club” pandal on Nayapara Road under Dharmanagar Power Subdivision No. 1. The TSECL official, along with other staff members, was engaged in urgent maintenance work to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the festival when an unidentified assailant suddenly launched an unprovoked attack.
Shocked colleagues immediately rushed the injured officer to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he received first aid and medication before being discharged. His condition is stated to be stable, but the incident has left TSECL employees shaken and anxious about their safety.
A formal complaint has been lodged at the Dharmanagar Police Station, and an investigation is underway. Corporation sources expressed deep concern, noting that the staff have been working round-the-clock throughout the festive season to maintain smooth power supply across the state.
This is not an isolated incident—similar attacks on electricity department employees have been reported from various parts of Tripura in recent years, though the menace continues despite repeated condemnation from authorities and the public.
In a strongly worded statement, TSECL condemned the attack, saying, “Our employees work tirelessly in the field, even during festivals, staying away from their families to ensure uninterrupted power for all. Any assault on them is an assault on public welfare. We appeal to all citizens to cooperate with electricity workers so that the light of this festival never turns into darkness for anyone.”
