Teliamura, Oct 5 — Widespread panic gripped the Noyabari area under Maiganga Gram Panchayat in Teliamura, after police recovered the decomposed body of a woman stuffed inside a plastic sack late Saturday night.
According to police, the body was found after local residents alerted authorities about a foul smell emanating from a locked house. Police rushed to the spot and, in the presence of locals, discovered the body of 36-year-old Sharmistha Modak inside a sealed plastic sack.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Sharmistha had been living in the area for nearly two years, having built a house there. Locals, however, said she maintained little contact with neighbours, and few knew much about her personal life or recent activities.
Her father, Ratan Modak, a resident of Rajnagar in Teliamura, told police that his daughter was earlier married to a man from Dasda in Kanchanpur, but the couple later divorced. She subsequently entered into another marriage with a close relative, after which he lost contact with her.
Police suspect the woman was murdered in a planned manner, as the condition of the body and the surroundings indicated foul play. Investigators also found several liquor bottles inside and around the house, raising further suspicion about the events leading to her death.
The police have initiated a full-scale investigation, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and time of death.
The gruesome discovery, coming just ahead of Lakshmi Puja celebrations, has left residents of Teliamura deeply shocked and anxious. Locals have demanded that the culprits behind the murder be identified and brought to justice at the earliest.
