Agartala, July 14, 2024 — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] held a solemn ceremony today to honor the memory of Tristar Panchayat election candidate Badal Sheel. The deceased’s body was transported from GB Hospital to the CPIM state office at Melar Ground early Sunday morning.
Former Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar, along with opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury and other party leaders, joined hundreds of workers and supporters in paying their respects. Wreaths were laid at the late candidate’s body as a mark of tribute.
Addressing the media, Jitendra Chowdhury expressed deep concern, stating, “This tragedy signifies more than the loss of an individual; it symbolizes the erosion of democracy in Tripura.”
Chowdhury criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that constitutional norms and democratic principles were under constant threat since the BJP assumed power. He further highlighted the ruling party’s apprehension in facing the upcoming panchayat elections, despite securing an overwhelming majority in the recent polls.
Badal Sheel’s untimely demise occurred after a violent attack. Miscreants assaulted him near his shop, leaving him severely injured. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at GB Hospital on Saturday afternoon.
The incident has sparked controversy, raising questions about the state of democracy and safety in Tripura.
