Agartala, July 6: Political tension gripped the 9-Banamalipur assembly constituency on Sunday after Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy narrowly escaped an attack by unidentified miscreants during a party meeting.
The incident occurred when a group of miscreants hurled objects at the Congress gathering, seemingly targeting the MLA. The sudden attack disrupted the meeting and sparked panic among party workers and locals present at the spot.
Soon after the incident, a team from East Agartala Police Station led by Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee rushed to the scene to restore order. Police presence was ramped up in the area to prevent any escalation of tension.
Speaking to the media, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy condemned the attack and called it an “assault on democracy.” He demanded swift police action to identify and apprehend those responsible for the disruption. “Such incidents reflect the worsening law and order situation in the state. I urge the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to take serious note and ensure accountability,” Roy said.
The Congress party has expressed deep concern over the attack and alleged that such acts are intended to silence opposition voices. Party leaders have also called for increased security measures for opposition representatives, especially during public events and political meetings.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police have initiated an investigation. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
The incident has reignited debates over political violence in Tripura and the safety of elected representatives. With Banamalipur being a politically sensitive constituency, the incident has drawn attention from both ruling and opposition camps, raising demands for a thorough and impartial probe.
