The Tripura government will undertake construction and improvement of around 980 kilometres of district roads and eight RCC bridges during the financial year 2026–27, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy announced while presenting the State Budget in the Legislative Assembly.

According to the budget proposals, several road development projects will be implemented across different districts to strengthen connectivity and improve transportation infrastructure. Among the key projects is the strengthening and improvement of the Chebri–Tulashikhar road in Khowai District with an allocation of ₹18.20 crore. Another project involves the improvement and upgradation of the road from Ramchandraghat to Dhalabil Chowmuhani in the same district, with a budget allocation of ₹13.50 crore.

The government has also proposed strengthening the road from Paikhola Bazar to Jashmura Tri-junction via Madaria under Bharat Chandra Nagar RD Block with an allocation of ₹11.25 crore. Additionally, construction of a road from Gandacherra to Babusai Camp has been planned with a budget of ₹67.62 crore, while a road project from Simsima to Gangacherra in Gomati District will be taken up with an allocation of ₹6.03 crore.

The Finance Minister further informed the House that the Department of Expenditure under the Government of India has sanctioned a major infrastructure initiative titled the “Tripura State Highway Improvement and Urban Mobility Project,” with a total estimated cost of ₹1,926.43 crore.

Under this project, several key highways will be upgraded, including the Champaknagar–Udaipur road via Khumlung and Jampuijala (40 km), the Jalebasa–Kanchanpur–Anandabazar road (54 km), the Santirbazar–Karbook road via Bagafa School (26 km), and the Jogendranagar–Jampuijala road via Anandanagar, Gabardi and Takarjala (28 km).

The budget speech noted that the loan agreement for the project under the Externally Aided Project (EAP) framework is expected to be signed soon, and implementation will begin in 2026–27. The project is scheduled to be completed within three years.

The Finance Minister said the government remains committed to developing safe, durable and climate-resilient road infrastructure. In the coming financial year, emphasis will be placed on improving road connectivity, ensuring timely completion of ongoing projects, adopting modern construction technologies and strengthening maintenance systems.

He also informed that several major national highway projects are currently underway, including the 25.4-km Agartala Western Bypass, the 135-km Khowai–Teliamura–Harina national highway, and the four-laning of the Champaknagar–Khayerpur stretch.

Preliminary work has also begun for preparation of detailed project reports for four-laning of National Highway 8 from Churaibari to Agartala and Agartala to Udaipur, along with the proposed Agartala Eastern Bypass and a new road link between Udaipur and Amarpur.
