A dramatic turn of events unfolded at Raja Chowmuhani market in Bishramganj on Thursday evening when panic spread through the crowded area after a 21-year-old woman cried for help from inside a vehicle, prompting locals and traders to intervene. What began as routine market activity quickly escalated into tense moments that drew the attention of both residents and police.
The woman, identified as Anjuman Rahman, a resident of Madhya Laxmibil in Bishalgarh, had already been at the center of a complex family and personal dispute. According to reports, she had been reported missing from her husband’s residence in Abhoynagar, Agartala, on September 27. Days later, on October 1, she was traced and rescued by the Agartala Women Police Station, after which she was sent to the Bishramganj DPRC rehabilitation centre for care.
On Thursday evening, Anjuman was being escorted home by members of her paternal family when the situation took a chaotic turn. While the vehicle carrying her passed through the bustling Raja Chowmuhani marketplace, Anjuman suddenly began crying out for help, alleging that she was being forced against her will and that her paternal relatives had attacked her.
Her desperate cries alarmed shopkeepers and passersby, who immediately stopped the vehicle, fearing that the young woman might be in danger. The incident sparked confusion in the market, with dozens of people surrounding the vehicle and questioning her relatives.
Alerted by the commotion, police personnel from the Bishramganj Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma, rushed to the scene and brought all parties involved to the station for questioning. At the station, the young woman continued to make contradictory statements. Police sources revealed that she appeared to be mentally disturbed, making it difficult to verify the authenticity of her claims on the spot.
“Her statements were inconsistent, and she seemed emotionally unstable. We followed all procedures and eventually handed her back to her family members,” said OC Debbarma, adding that the situation was being closely monitored.
However, the drama did not end there. Even after leaving the police station, Anjuman loudly declared that if any harm befell her, her paternal family members should be held responsible. Eyewitnesses reported that her distressed behavior continued for several minutes outside the police premises, drawing further public attention.
Sources close to the case also suggested that Anjuman’s personal life may have played a role in the ongoing tension. After separating from her first husband, she was allegedly involved in a relationship with another youth from Sonamura, further complicating the family dispute.
The incident has raised questions about family conflicts, women’s safety, and mental health challenges in sensitive cases such as this. While police maintain that Anjuman is in the custody of her family for now, her repeated cries for help and allegations against her own relatives have left the community unsettled.
For the locals at Raja Chowmuhani, the evening’s events were both shocking and unforgettable. What seemed like just another busy marketplace scene turned into a public drama of suspicion, family strife, and cries for justice, leaving behind an air of unease in Bishramganj.
