Agartala, July 18: The Directorate of Census Operations, Tripura, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has intensified preparations for the National Census 2027, with a strong focus on technology-driven data collection, transparency and accuracy.

As part of the preparatory exercise, a high-level meeting was held on Friday at the conference hall of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). The meeting was chaired by AMC Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar and attended by senior civic officials and representatives of the Census Directorate.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Majumdar highlighted the significance of the census, describing it as far more than a statistical exercise. He said the data collected during the census serves as the foundation for government policymaking, welfare schemes, infrastructure development and equitable allocation of public resources.

The meeting focused on two key components of the census process—House Listing and Housing Census (HLO) and Population Enumeration (PE). Officials from the Directorate of Census Operations gave detailed presentations on the methodology, implementation strategy and data collection procedures that will be adopted to ensure the exercise is conducted efficiently and accurately.

Mayor Majumdar stressed that Census 2027 will witness extensive use of digital tools and modern technology, making it India’s first fully digital census. He said technology would enable real-time monitoring of field operations, minimise human errors, improve transparency and ensure faster processing of census data.

Urging officials to approach the exercise with dedication and responsibility, the Mayor said accurate census data is essential for effective development planning and informed decision-making. He noted that government policies on education, healthcare, housing, urban planning and welfare programmes depend heavily on reliable population statistics.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, AMC Commissioner Saju Wahid A., IAS, along with senior officials from various departments.

Officials of the Directorate of Census Operations informed participants that the census would be conducted in phases, supported by extensive training programmes for enumerators and supervisors, public awareness campaigns and strict adherence to operational protocols to ensure maximum coverage and inclusivity.

They said special emphasis would be placed on building a transparent, technology-enabled and citizen-friendly census process that accurately reflects Tripura’s diverse population and supports evidence-based governance and development planning.
