Kumarghat, August 24: West Tripura MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the previous communist regime in Tripura, accusing them of depriving the state’s youth of opportunities in sports and misguiding them for political gain.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a football tournament organized by the Kumarghat Play Centre, Deb said, “Communists have always been against development. Instead of building a healthy sports environment, they focused on misleading the youth and expanding their political rallies.”
Referring to the Left rule as a period of stagnation, Deb remarked, “The CPM, a party without culture, was like a permanent emergency for Tripura.”
The football tournament, held at the PWD ground in Kumarghat, was organized under the initiative of local MLA Bhagaban Das. The inaugural ceremony was attended by MP Rajib Bhattacharjee and Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumder, among other dignitaries.
Deb emphasized the importance of sports in shaping disciplined, healthy, and focused individuals and praised the current government’s efforts to promote athletic activities across the state. He noted that the BJP-led government is committed to nurturing young talent and creating a vibrant sporting culture.
A total of 16 teams from across the region are participating in the tournament, which kicked off amid much enthusiasm and local fanfare. The event drew a large crowd, particularly young people, reflecting a renewed interest in community-based sports initiatives.
The tournament not only aims to promote football at the grassroots level but also serves as a platform to engage the youth positively. Deb concluded by encouraging young athletes to pursue sports with dedication and make the state proud.
