Agartala, July 27: Political tension gripped the Chandrapur Club area under Dharmanagar Police Station in North Tripura after two Youth Congress workers were allegedly assaulted by unidentified miscreants on Saturday night, triggering protests by Congress leaders and supporters.

The incident prompted a large number of Congress workers, led by district leaders, to stage a demonstration and gherao the Dharmanagar Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. Protesters submitted a written complaint seeking a fair and impartial investigation, stringent legal action against the accused and exemplary punishment.

The two injured Youth Congress workers were admitted to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

Addressing the media, North Tripura District Congress president Nirupam Dey alleged that the attack was a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition workers and disrupt the party’s political activities in the region. He claimed the incident reflected a deteriorating law and order situation and questioned the role of the administration in preventing such attacks.

“The perpetrators must be arrested without delay. We want a neutral investigation and strict punishment for those involved,” Dey said, adding that the Congress would continue its democratic protest until justice was delivered.

The protest at the police station continued for several hours before senior police officials intervened and assured the party leaders that appropriate legal action would be taken. Following the assurance, the Congress temporarily withdrew the gherao.

However, the party issued a strong warning to the administration, stating that if the accused were not arrested within 24 hours, it would launch a larger agitation across the district. Congress leaders said the next phase of the movement would include continuous demonstrations and intensified protest programmes.

In view of the tense situation, additional police personnel have been deployed in the Chandrapur and Dharmanagar areas to prevent any further disturbance and maintain law and order.

Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. They said efforts are on to identify and apprehend those involved in the alleged assault.

The incident has heightened political tensions in North Tripura, with the Congress accusing the administration of failing to ensure the safety of opposition workers while demanding swift action against the culprits.
