Agartala, July 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday showcased ‘Chongpreng’, a traditional musical instrument of Tripura’s indigenous tribal communities, during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, praising efforts to preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage.

During the address, the Prime Minister described the Chongpreng, a bamboo-made string instrument, as one that produces a sweet and melodious sound and forms an integral part of Tripura’s tribal cultural identity. He observed that although the instrument has a rich legacy, its popularity among the younger generation had gradually declined over the years.

Highlighting an inspiring story of cultural preservation, Prime Minister Modi lauded the efforts of Suraj Kumar Debbarma, who has been working tirelessly to revive the traditional instrument and reconnect young people with their cultural roots.

“Recognising that the popularity of the Chongpreng was fading among the youth, Suraj Kumar Debbarma took the initiative to preserve and promote this unique tradition. Through his dedicated efforts, he is not only reviving the Chongpreng but also making it popular once again among the younger generation,” the Prime Minister said.

The mention of Tripura’s traditional musical heritage in a national broadcast was widely welcomed in the state.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for highlighting Tripura’s cultural legacy before the nation. In a message shared after the programme, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Modi for recognising the state’s indigenous traditions and promoting the preservation of its unique cultural heritage.

Dr. Saha also joined local residents in listening to the Mann Ki Baat programme at Booth No. 51 under the Pratapgarh Assembly constituency, where BJP workers and supporters gathered to hear the Prime Minister’s address.

The latest episode of Mann Ki Baat featured several inspiring stories from across the country, including achievements in sports, education, handicrafts and community initiatives. However, the Prime Minister’s special mention of the Chongpreng and the efforts to revive it stood out as a significant recognition of Tripura’s rich tribal culture, reinforcing the importance of preserving India’s diverse folk traditions for future generations.
