Srinagar, Aug 25 – Alert Indian Army soldiers on Monday foiled an infiltration attempt by terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

According to an Army official, troops deployed on forward posts noticed suspicious movement near the LoC and immediately opened fire. Search operations have been launched in the area to trace the infiltrators and ensure no breach of the border takes place.

The incident comes less than two weeks after two soldiers were killed in the same sector. On August 13, Havildar Ankit Kumar and Sepoy Banoth Anil Kumar laid down their lives during operational duties in Uri. Their sacrifice had drawn tributes from the Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, which reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders.

The LoC, stretching 740 kilometres across Jammu and Kashmir, has largely remained calm since India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10 this year. The truce came after four days of intense cross-border shelling and missile strikes triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local resident, were killed by Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists.

Meanwhile, security forces have stepped up anti-terror operations in the Valley. On August 13, a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered in Kupwara district. The haul included a 9 mm Chinese pistol, two magazines, five rounds of ammunition, three AK-47 magazines, 260 rounds, four UBGL grenades, an IED/mine with five metres of wire, three hand grenades of Pakistani origin, 30 mine fuses, detonators, and other explosive devices. Notably, brown sugar sachets and a bag bearing a Pakistani address in Urdu were also recovered, indicating cross-border links.

The Army has intensified vigil along the LoC to prevent any fresh infiltration attempts.
