Agartala, Feb 25: Tension gripped parts of the city on Wednesday as members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a protest rally condemning the rising incidents of crimes against women across the country and in Tripura.

Organised by the state committee of AIDWA, the demonstration sought to highlight what the organisation described as an alarming surge in cases of sexual assault, rape, and murder. Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters marched through key stretches of Agartala, drawing public attention to their demands for stronger safety measures and justice for victims.

The rally intensified when demonstrators attempted to move towards the residence of Chief Minister Manik Saha to submit a memorandum. However, police personnel intercepted the procession before it could reach the destination, leading to a brief standoff. AIDWA leaders alleged that they were prevented from proceeding further despite their intention to peacefully place their demands before the government.

Addressing reporters, members of the state committee criticised both the central and state governments, accusing them of “administrative failure” in ensuring women’s safety. They claimed that despite recurring incidents, effective preventive strategies and speedy justice mechanisms remain inadequate. According to them, the lack of accountability and delays in investigation and prosecution have contributed to public anger and insecurity.

The protesters demanded stricter enforcement of existing laws, improved policing, fast-track trials for crimes against women, and greater administrative accountability. They emphasised the need for coordinated action to restore public confidence and ensure a safer environment for women.

The rally concluded peacefully, with AIDWA leaders warning that they would intensify statewide agitation if concrete and time-bound measures are not taken to curb crimes against women.
