Agartala: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified efforts to find a permanent solution to recurring water-logging in different parts of the city during the monsoon, with Mayor Dipak Majumder conducting an on-ground inspection of vulnerable areas on Friday.

Accompanied by engineers and senior officials of the civic body, the Mayor visited several locations that frequently face water accumulation following heavy rainfall. The inspection was aimed at assessing the existing drainage network, identifying bottlenecks and working out measures to ensure faster discharge of rainwater.

Among the areas inspected were RMS Chowmuhani and Joynagar, where the Mayor reviewed the condition of drains and other infrastructure linked to the city’s stormwater management system.

During the visit, officials identified several points where obstructions were reportedly affecting the smooth flow of rainwater. Majumder directed engineers and officials concerned to address the problems without delay and focus on permanent measures rather than temporary solutions.

“We inspected various waterlogging-prone areas of Agartala along with the engineers and senior officials of the Municipal Corporation. We examined the drainage situation on the ground and identified the points where obstacles are causing problems in water discharge,” the Mayor said.

He stressed the need for effective drainage management, particularly during the monsoon when intense spells of rain can result in rapid water accumulation in low-lying and drainage-sensitive areas of the city.

The civic body’s latest initiative is focused on removing drainage bottlenecks and strengthening infrastructure to minimise disruption to residents, commuters and businesses during heavy rainfall.

Apart from reviewing the drainage situation, the Mayor also inspected the site of a new coffee house being developed at the Agartala Children’s Park ground. He sought an update from officials on the progress of construction and directed the authorities concerned to expedite the remaining work and complete the project at the earliest.

Corporator Ratna Dutta, AMC East Zone Chairman Sukhmay Saha and AMC Commissioner Saju Wahid A accompanied the Mayor during the inspection. Engineers and other officials associated with the drainage and development projects were also present.

The inspection forms part of AMC’s efforts to strengthen civic infrastructure and improve monsoon preparedness across Agartala, with greater emphasis on long-term measures to tackle the city’s recurring water-logging problem.
