The Traffic Unit of Agartala Police has launched a special enforcement drive against under-age driving in the city, during which five cases of juveniles operating motorised vehicles have been detected so far. The drive, which commenced on December 24, is aimed at curbing the growing menace of minors below 18 years driving vehicles, a practice authorities described as a serious threat to public safety.

Traffic officials said the special operation was initiated following repeated complaints and rising incidents involving under-age drivers, which pose risks not only to the minors themselves but also to pedestrians and other road users. During the checks, juveniles were found riding two-wheelers and driving motor vehicles in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police stated that strict legal action will be taken under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Under this provision, the responsibility for the offence rests with the vehicle owner or the parent or guardian who allowed the minor to drive. Prosecution reports in all detected cases are being prepared and will be submitted before the competent court for further legal proceedings.

As per the law, the prescribed punishment includes a fine of Rs 25,000 on the vehicle owner or guardian, imprisonment of the responsible adult for a term that may extend up to three years, and cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for one year. In addition, juveniles found guilty of under-age driving will be barred from obtaining a driving licence until they attain the age of 25.

The Traffic Police have urged parents and guardians to act responsibly and strictly refrain from allowing minors to operate any motor vehicle. Officials emphasised that under-age driving not only violates statutory provisions but also significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents.

Police added that the enforcement drive will continue in different parts of Agartala in the coming days. Regular checking and awareness measures will be undertaken to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to enhance overall road safety in the city.
