The Agartala Press Club on Friday urged the Tripura Police to strengthen safety and security measures for media personnel working across the state, citing growing concerns over their working conditions and risks during field reporting.

A five-member delegation of the press club, led by president Pranab Sarkar, met Director General of Police Anurag at the police headquarters in a pre-scheduled meeting. The delegation raised several issues related to the safety of journalists and called for proactive intervention by the police administration.

Among the key concerns highlighted was the misuse of “press” stickers by unauthorized individuals. The delegation stressed the need for stricter regulation to prevent such misuse, which they said could compromise the credibility and safety of genuine journalists. They also demanded the distribution of all-weather press jackets to media personnel to ensure proper identification, especially while covering assignments in challenging conditions.

The delegation further pointed out that many journalists, particularly photojournalists and reporters, often work late into the night. In this context, they urged the police to intensify patrolling, especially in Agartala and sub-divisional towns, to enhance security during night hours.

Issues discussed during the press club’s managing committee meeting and annual general body meeting were also brought to the attention of the DGP and other senior police officials present at the meeting.

The delegation included vice-president Chitra Roy, joint secretaries Kamal Chowdhury and Abhishek Dey, and executive member Abhishek Debbarma.

The meeting was held shortly after the conclusion of the TTAADC election process, a period that saw heightened media activity across the state.

The press club also expressed concern over the spread of misleading information on social media platforms by individuals posing as content creators. They urged the police to take necessary steps to curb such activities and ensure accountability.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sarkar said the DGP had acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that appropriate measures would be taken.

The developments were shared in a press statement issued by Agartala Press Club secretary Ramakanta Dey.
