Following the instructions of the West Tripura district administration, the District Magistrate has ordered the immediate closure of the Messrs Biswas & Sons petrol pump located in the Old Motor Stand area of Agartala. The decision comes after the pump was found to be operating in a dangerously unsafe condition.

According to the district administration, the petrol pump had been functioning without adhering to even the most basic fire safety norms. During an inspection, officials observed that essential fire safety arrangements—considered mandatory for all fuel stations—were either completely absent or grossly inadequate. This included a lack of functional fire extinguishers, emergency water supply, sand buckets, safety signboards, and other crucial protective measures.

Authorities stated that such negligence put the safety of the general public at severe risk. As petrol pumps handle highly flammable fuel, violations of safety protocols can lead to catastrophic accidents. The administration noted that continued operation of the pump under these circumstances could have triggered a major fire incident, posing a grave threat to residents, shopkeepers, commuters, and nearby establishments.

Local people had also expressed concerns for a long time regarding the unsafe condition of the petrol pump. Their apprehensions were confirmed after the official inspection revealed multiple safety lapses. Taking the matter seriously, the District Magistrate issued a strict closure order, ensuring that the pump ceases operation until further notice.

The administration has clarified that the petrol pump will only be allowed to resume operations after it fully complies with all mandatory fire safety guidelines and submits proof of adequate safety measures. Officials emphasised that the decision was taken purely in the interest of public safety.

Residents of the Old Motor Stand area have welcomed the action, expressing relief that a potential danger has now been addressed. Many hope that the administration will continue to take similar strict steps against any establishment found violating safety norms.
