Tripura Government Collects Over Rs 31 Crore in Traffic Fines from Violators

Agartala, March 4, 2024: The Tripura government has successfully collected a staggering Rs 31 crore in fines from more than 4 lakh individuals who violated traffic rules over the past three years, as reported by the Home Department.

In response to a query posed by CPI(M) MLA Nirmal Biswas during the budget session of the Assembly, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha provided a written reply. According to the data, a total of 4,11,550 people faced penalties for riding without helmets and driving without valid vehicle documents during the periods of 2021-22, 2022-23, and up to January 2023-24.

The breakdown of fines is 2021-22: 38,891 people fined for not wearing helmets and 78,483 people fined for driving without valid vehicle documents, resulting in a total collection of Rs 9,01,66,910. 2022-23: 45,272 people fined for not wearing helmets and 98,495 people fined for driving without valid vehicle documents, with a total amount collected of Rs 11,23,36,700. 2023-24 (up to January): 57,515 people fined for not wearing helmets and 90,894 people fined for driving without valid vehicle documents, leading to a total collection of Rs 11,02,37,830.

These fines were imposed in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The state government continues to emphasize the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and is actively working to enhance infrastructure and enforcement facilities for road safety.
