Kanchanpur, February 18: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) faced a significant setback in Kanchanpur as 116 voters defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This development has raised concerns among CPM leaders in the region.
Yesterday afternoon, a BJP joining meeting was held at the Kanchanpur market to formally welcome the CPM workers and supporters who switched allegiance to the Lotus camp. A spirited procession and rally took place in the market, with the new BJP members participating. Gautam Roy, the President of the Kanchanpur BJP Mandal, along with BJP leaders Arun Nath and Tapasendu Nath, extended warm greetings to the newcomers.
The news of this defection has reverberated through Kanchanpur, with discussions unfolding on the streets. The newly joined BJP members have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the CPM.
BJP sources reveal that the defectors have leveled serious allegations against the CPM. They claim that the party office has been infiltrated by corrupt, looter, and anti-social elements. Furthermore, they accuse the CPM leadership of ignoring complaints from ordinary workers regarding these individuals.
In response, CPM insiders argue that the decision to switch parties is often influenced by practical considerations. They assert that this trend has persisted in the past, continues in the present, and will likely persist in the future.
