Agartala, September 13: A family dispute allegedly turned fatal in Kamalasagar on Saturday night when a 28-year-old woman was stabbed to death while returning home after attending a fair at the Kasba Kali temple.
The deceased, identified as Sujita Deb, was travelling towards Nehal Chandra Nagar with her sister Pinki Deb when the two were allegedly stopped on the road by Sujita’s father-in-law, Sanjit Nama, and brother-in-law, Nayan Nama.
According to relatives and eyewitnesses, the confrontation soon escalated into an argument. Sujita’s husband, Pritam Nama, and her sister reportedly tried to intervene as tensions rose between the family members.
During the altercation, Nayan Nama allegedly attacked Sujita with a knife and stabbed her several times. She collapsed at the roadside and became unconscious.
The injured woman was immediately taken to Madhupur Hospital. Given the seriousness of her condition, she was subsequently referred to TMC and then to GB Pant Hospital. However, she was declared dead on arrival.
The incident reportedly followed longstanding opposition within Pritam’s family to his marriage with Sujita.
Speaking to the media, Pritam said Sujita was his second wife. He said his earlier marriage had ended in separation and that he had married Sujita around three years ago. Since their marriage, he claimed, the couple had been living in rented accommodation separately from his family because they did not accept the relationship.
Pinki, Sujita’s sister, said she had been staying with the victim since August 28. She said the two women had gone to the annual fair at Kasba Kali temple on Saturday and were returning home when Sanjit and Nayan allegedly stopped them.
Pinki alleged that the two men began confronting Sujita and arguing with Pritam. She said the situation became tense before the alleged stabbing took place.
The exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the events leading to Sujita’s death are being examined.
Sujita’s mother and brother have demanded stringent punishment for those allegedly responsible for the killing.
Further details of the case, including the sequence of events and the legal action taken, are awaited.
