Agartala, September 5, 2026: The Left Front in Tripura has urged the State Election Commission to deploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) across all constituencies of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections, citing concerns over the prevailing law-and-order situation.

At a press conference held on Saturday at the CPI(M) State Office in Melarmath, senior leaders of the CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI(ML) Liberation outlined their concerns and submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission.

Former minister and Left Front convener Manik Dey alleged that Left candidates were facing threats and obstruction during the election process and warned that incidents of electoral violence could not be ruled out.

The memorandum claimed that political violence against CPI(M) and other Left workers had increased in several areas, alleging that supporters of ruling parties were involved and that adequate legal action had not been taken.

The Left Front specifically referred to Hezamara, Lefunga, Belbari and Jirania blocks, where it alleged that miscreants prevented Left candidates from entering block offices to file nomination papers. In Hezamara, candidates were reportedly rescued by police from inside the block office, according to the Opposition alliance.

The Left Front demanded adequate security at all block offices to ensure candidates can submit their nominations without obstruction and return safely.

The alliance also expressed concern over possible clashes between supporters of the BJP and Tipra Motha Party, despite the two parties being partners in the state government. It claimed such confrontations had created additional law-and-order challenges.

Concerns were also raised over the safety of Opposition polling agents. The Left Front alleged that during previous elections, its agents were prevented from entering polling stations or forcibly removed. It sought police protection for polling agents while travelling to and from polling stations.

Among its key demands, the alliance called for all polling stations to be declared “very sensitive”, CAPF deployment at least a week before polling, restrictions on outsiders entering ADC areas after campaigning ends, identity checks at booth entrances, and continuous webcasting and camera surveillance.

Dey alleged that Tripura had witnessed instances of bogus voting and attempts to prevent genuine voters from exercising their franchise. He appealed to tribal and Bengali communities to maintain peace, communal harmony and unity throughout the elections.
