Tension gripped Champaknagar on Friday as former members of surrendered insurgent groups ATTF and NLFT launched a fresh agitation, blocking the Assam–Agartala National Highway and the railway line at Brigudas over a seven-point charter of demands.

The simultaneous road and rail blockade disrupted traffic and railway movement, causing inconvenience to commuters and transport operators. Long queues of vehicles were reported on the national highway, while railway services were also affected.

The protesters alleged that several commitments made by the Central and State Governments following their surrender remain unfulfilled. They claimed that promises relating to rehabilitation, financial assistance, welfare benefits and other support measures have not been implemented fully despite repeated representations to the authorities.

According to the agitators, they had earlier participated in similar demonstrations in Champaknagar and other parts of the state. On those occasions, administrative officials had assured them that their grievances would be examined and appropriate action taken. However, the protesters claimed that no concrete or permanent solution followed.

The latest agitation began early in the morning, with protestors occupying the national highway in Champaknagar while simultaneously blocking the railway track at Brigudas. They announced that the blockade would continue until their seven demands were addressed.

Protest leaders also rejected assurances from local officials, insisting that they wanted senior-level intervention. They demanded that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and the Director of the Tribal Welfare Department personally visit the protest site and provide clear and specific commitments before the blockade is withdrawn.

Authorities have stepped up monitoring around the protest locations and initiated talks with the agitators in an attempt to resolve the situation. Security personnel have also been deployed to manage traffic and maintain public order.

The blockade has raised concerns over prolonged disruption to road and rail connectivity in the area, particularly if the deadlock continues.

The protesters said they would remain firm until receiving written or concrete assurances on their rehabilitation and welfare-related demands. Authorities, meanwhile, are continuing efforts to restore normal movement and prevent further escalation.

The agitation once again highlights unresolved grievances among sections of surrendered insurgents and the continuing demand for implementation of rehabilitation commitments made after their surrender.
