Agartala, Oct 29 :Nearly 11 lakh Jan Dhan bank accounts have been opened in Tripura over the past decade, with women holding around seven lakh of them, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy said on Thursday.
Addressing a blood donation camp at the headquarters of Tripura Gramin Bank during Vigilance Awareness Week 2026, Roy highlighted the role of financial inclusion in strengthening the rural economy and ensuring the direct transfer of government benefits to beneficiaries.
The programme was organised under the theme “Probity for Prosperity” and attended by Tripura Gramin Bank Chairman Satyendra Singh and senior bank officials.
Roy said the banking sector had undergone a significant transformation since 2014, with financial services reaching remote villages and bringing people previously excluded from the formal banking system into its fold.
He credited the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, regional rural banks and cooperative banks with expanding banking access across the state.
The minister said direct transfers of government assistance into beneficiaries’ bank accounts had improved their purchasing power and generated economic activity across various sectors.
Highlighting the impact of housing-related welfare schemes, Roy said around Rs 7,500 crore had reached beneficiaries through different assistance programmes. These funds had supported households and generated employment for construction workers, masons, painters and building material suppliers, he added.
More than Rs 1,000 crore had been credited to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, while another Rs 500 crore had reached cultivators through paddy procurement payments, Roy said.
Loans worth nearly Rs 2,700 crore had also been disbursed under the Kisan Credit Card programme, he added.
Roy claimed that government schemes, self-help groups and other development initiatives had collectively channelled around Rs 14,500 crore into Tripura’s economy.
Emphasising transparency in public expenditure, he said digital procurement platforms such as the Government e-Marketplace had improved accountability and helped reduce costs.
The minister also called for a collective campaign against child marriage and teenage pregnancy, urging families, government departments, civil society organisations and the media to work together to raise awareness.
He said around 80,000 Unique Disability Identity cards had been issued in Tripura and stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and social awareness.
“Child marriage must end if we are to realise the vision of a developed India,” Roy said.
The programme concluded with a blood donation drive in which 54 volunteers donated blood.
