Nath Urges Farmers to Embrace Sustainable Farming for Long-Term Growth

Agartala, June 20: Tripura has registered a significant increase in fish production during the 2025–26 financial year, reflecting steady progress toward self-reliance in the fisheries sector and strengthening the state’s food security and rural economy.

The achievement was highlighted by Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das during a state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department held on Friday at the Directorate’s conference hall in Gurkhabasti. According to provisional figures presented at the meeting, fish production in the state has risen from 85,000 metric tons in 2024–25 to 95,144.50 metric tons in 2025–26, marking an impressive growth of over 10,000 metric tons within a year.

Minister Das attributed the encouraging performance to the successful implementation of various government initiatives, particularly the Mukhyamantri Matsya Bikash Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). He noted that these schemes have played a crucial role in expanding fish farming activities, improving infrastructure, and providing support to fish farmers across the state.

The review meeting brought together fisheries officials from the sub-divisional, district, and state levels to assess departmental achievements, budget utilization, and the progress of ongoing projects during the current financial year. Discussions focused on identifying strengths, addressing implementation challenges, and ensuring that development schemes are delivered efficiently and transparently.

Emphasizing the importance of accountability, the Fisheries Minister urged officials to remain committed to their responsibilities and ensure that government benefits reach the intended beneficiaries on time. He stressed that effective monitoring and sincere execution of programmes are key to sustaining growth in the sector.

The meeting also deliberated on strategies and priorities for the 2026–27 financial year, with a strong focus on making Tripura fully self-sufficient in fish production. Minister Das called for innovative approaches, improved resource management, and greater participation of farmers to further enhance productivity and reduce dependence on fish imports.

Concluding the review, the Minister directed officials to strengthen grassroots-level implementation, improve monitoring mechanisms, and maintain momentum in ongoing initiatives. He reiterated that fisheries remain a vital pillar of the state’s economy, contributing significantly to livelihoods, nutrition, and sustainable rural development across Tripura.
