Agartala, June 20: The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress celebrated the birthday of senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, with a tree plantation programme at Gandhi Ghat in Agartala on Friday, emphasizing environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The initiative was led by Pradesh Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, who, along with party leaders, workers, and supporters, planted saplings of various species as part of a campaign aimed at promoting ecological awareness and expanding green cover across the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Saha said the programme was designed not only to commemorate Rahul Gandhi’s birthday but also to inspire collective action towards environmental protection. He stated that the organisation intends to undertake similar plantation drives across different districts of Tripura, with an ambitious target of planting nearly 900 trees in the coming weeks.

“We wanted to make this day meaningful by spreading the message of environmental conservation and sustainable living. Planting trees is important, but ensuring their growth and survival is equally crucial. Our objective is to contribute to a greener and healthier Tripura for future generations,” Saha said.

The Youth Congress leadership highlighted the growing need for environmental protection in the face of climate change, rising temperatures, and increasing pressure on natural resources. Party members called upon citizens, especially young people, to actively participate in conservation efforts and community-driven initiatives aimed at preserving the environment.

During the programme, Saha also criticized the policies of the current government, alleging that unchecked deforestation and the commercial exploitation of natural resources were adversely affecting ecological balance and environmental sustainability. He described the plantation drive as both a tribute to Rahul Gandhi and a symbolic expression of concern over environmental degradation.

Party leaders reiterated that environmental conservation should be treated as a shared responsibility involving citizens, government agencies, and civil society organizations. They stressed the importance of increasing green cover, protecting biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development practices to safeguard the environment.

The event concluded with participants taking a pledge to care for the newly planted saplings and continue supporting environmental initiatives. The Youth Congress announced that similar programmes would be organized throughout the state in the coming months, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection, public participation, and a greener future for Tripura.
