Agartala, June 14: In a significant political development, candidates backed by the Opposition-supported Save Constitution Forum, comprising members aligned with the CPI(M) and Congress, registered an impressive performance in the Tripura Bar Association elections held on June 13.

According to the results declared late Saturday night, Pritha Deb Paul and Bhaskar Debbarma emerged victorious in the two most important posts of the association, securing the positions of President and Secretary respectively. The newly elected executive committee will serve a two-year term and oversee administrative affairs and legal advocacy initiatives for the legal fraternity in the state.

Pritha Deb Paul won the President’s post by polling 186 votes, defeating her nearest rival Mrinal Kanti Biswas, who secured 165 votes. Other candidates in the fray, Subrata Debnath and Tapan Saha, received 158 and 42 votes respectively.

For the post of Vice-President (General), Jiban Krishna Sen emerged victorious with 221 votes, ahead of Sanjoy Saha (175 votes) and Daniel Debbarma (124 votes).

A decisive victory was recorded in the contest for Secretary (General), where Bhaskar Debbarma secured an impressive 298 votes, comfortably defeating Bidyut Sutradhar, who polled 177 votes. Raghunath Mukherjee finished third with 68 votes.

In the reserved categories, Mallika Saha was elected Assistant Secretary (Women Reserve) with a commanding 319 votes, defeating Chaitali Bhattacharjee, who secured 207 votes. The post of Assistant Secretary (General) went to Bhabani Ranjan Bhattacharjee, who garnered 219 votes, surpassing Mintu Debbarma (192 votes) and Mridul Kanti Arya (101 votes).

Among the elected executive committee members in the Women Reserve category, Ruthi Debbarma topped the list with 322 votes, followed by Likha Bhowmik (280) and Bhandari Reang (237).

In the General Category, Subir Saha secured the highest number of votes in the entire election with 342 votes. Other successful candidates included Niladri Mukherjee, Debabrata Debnath, Debjyoti Debnath, Anirban Lodh, Arpan Das, and Kishalay Roy.

Out of 601 registered voters, 520 exercised their franchise. A total of 34 candidates contested for 15 posts, making the election one of the most keenly contested in recent years.
