Agartala, June 14: Tripura on Saturday mourned the loss of one of its most respected political figures, Faijur Rahman, former minister and eight-time MLA from the Kurti Assembly Constituency, who passed away in the early hours of the day. He breathed his last at his residence at around 1:10 a.m., according to family sources.

A senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Rahman was widely known for his unwavering commitment to public service and his significant contributions to Tripura’s political and social development. Throughout his long political career, he earned a reputation for simplicity, integrity, and a strong connection with grassroots communities.

Rahman played a key role in shaping labour welfare initiatives and rural development programmes during his tenure as a minister in the Left Front government. His leadership and dedication helped improve the lives of countless people, particularly in North Tripura, where he remained a highly influential and respected figure for decades.

The news of his demise triggered an outpouring of grief across the state. Political leaders, party workers, social activists, and residents from different walks of life paid tribute to the veteran leader. CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury described Rahman’s death as an “irreparable loss” to both the party and the people of Tripura.

Born into a humble family, Rahman dedicated his life to social activism and politics. His eight-term tenure as an MLA reflected the trust and support he enjoyed among the people. Even political opponents acknowledged his contribution to public life and his commitment to democratic values.

In recent months, Rahman had been battling age-related health issues. Senior CPI(M) leaders had visited him earlier this month to enquire about his health and well-being.

Condolences have poured in from leaders across political parties, social organisations, and civil society groups, who remembered him as a towering leader of the Left movement and a steadfast champion of the common people. His passing marks the end of an era in Tripura politics.
