Agartala, June 5: Marking World Environment Day with a strong message of environmental responsibility, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder participated in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation programme at Ward No. 35, encouraging citizens to contribute towards a greener and healthier future.

The initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide call for mass participation in environmental conservation, witnessed enthusiastic involvement from local residents, councillors, and community leaders. As part of the programme, Majumder planted a sapling in memory of his mother, symbolizing the emotional connection between environmental protection and family values.

Addressing the gathering, the Mayor said, “Today I planted a sapling in honour of my mother. I urge everyone to come forward and plant trees to make our surroundings greener and healthier. However, our responsibility does not end with planting a tree. The real success lies in nurturing and protecting the saplings so that they grow into strong trees.”

Majumder emphasized that this year’s focus would be on ensuring the survival and proper care of newly planted saplings. He noted that sustained maintenance is essential for achieving long-term environmental benefits and enhancing urban green cover.

The programme was attended by Ward Councillor Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee, Ramnagar Mandal President Amitabh Bhattacharya, Councillor Nitu Dey Guha, Minority Development Corporation Chairman Jasim Uddin, and Tripura Road Transport Corporation Acting Chairman Samar Roy, among other dignitaries and local residents.

Speakers at the event highlighted the growing need for environmental conservation in the face of climate change and urban expansion. They called upon citizens to actively participate in afforestation drives and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

Local residents welcomed the initiative, stating that such programmes not only improve the city’s green cover but also foster a sense of community participation and collective responsibility. Many expressed hope that regular plantation drives and proper maintenance of saplings would contribute significantly to making Agartala a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.

The event concluded with a pledge by participants to care for the planted saplings and continue supporting environmental conservation efforts throughout the year.
