Agartala, March 7: The state’s Education Department has come under scrutiny amid allegations that several government school teachers have resumed private tuition despite earlier commitments to refrain from the practice.

According to sources, about a year ago teachers were required to sign undertakings stating that they would not engage in private tutoring. While many initially complied with the directive, the absence of strict monitoring and follow-up by the department has reportedly led to a gradual return of the practice in several parts of the state.

Concerns have also been raised by parents, who allege that some teachers indirectly compel students to attend their private coaching classes. In some cases, it has been claimed that students risk receiving lower project or practical marks if they do not enrol in the private tuition sessions conducted by the same teachers. Such allegations have created anxiety among parents, who say they are left with little choice but to pay for additional classes.

Observers note that during the previous Left Front government, strict measures were reportedly taken to curb the practice. Teachers found conducting private tuition faced disciplinary action, including transfers and show-cause notices. However, following changes in ministerial leadership in the education sector, the practice is said to have resurfaced in some areas.

Similar complaints have also been raised against certain private schools. Some parents claim that students may face discrimination in evaluation if they do not take tuition from teachers associated with their schools.

Parents and education observers are now urging the government to introduce clearer regulations and strict enforcement to address the issue. They argue that banning such practices would not only ensure fairness in academic evaluation but could also create opportunities for educated unemployed youth to engage in tutoring, thereby contributing to reducing unemployment in the state.

The matter has sparked widespread debate, with many calling on the Education Department to take firm and transparent action.
