Agartala, Feb 27: Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Y. Naik on Friday inaugurated a 15-kilowatt grid-connected rooftop solar power plant at the Gomati District Magistrate’s office in Udaipur, formally launching Tripura’s plan to solarise all eight district administrative headquarters.

The initiative marks an expansion of the state’s renewable energy drive from residential rooftops to key public institutions. The project is being implemented in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the “Solar Sankalp” initiative, with execution entrusted to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL).

Addressing the gathering, Naik said solar energy is set to become a central pillar of India’s future power landscape. Integrating government offices into the solar network, he noted, is not only about cutting electricity costs but also about promoting environmentally responsible governance. He described Tripura’s move as a grassroots-level implementation of the Union government’s renewable energy vision.

Gomati is the first district where the project has been commissioned. According to TSECL officials, rooftop solar plants with a combined capacity of 304 kilowatts will be installed across all eight District Magistrate offices at an estimated cost of Rs 2.43 crore. Planned capacities include 49 kW in Sepahijala, 35 kW in South Tripura, 90 kW in North Tripura, 15 kW in Khowai, 22 kW in Unakoti, 25 kW in Dhalai and 53 kW in West Tripura.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath termed the initiative a forward-looking step towards energy self-reliance and fiscal prudence. He also urged citizens to adopt rooftop systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, highlighting the benefits of net metering in reducing bills and promoting clean energy.
