Deb, a prominent political leader from Tripura, previously served as the Chief Minister of Tripura and had also been a member of the Rajya Sabha for a brief tenure before his election to the Lok Sabha. His appointment to head the parliamentary friendship group is seen as a significant responsibility in strengthening India’s parliamentary diplomacy.

The India-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group has been constituted during the current term of the Lok Sabha to enhance inter-parliamentary engagement and deepen bilateral cooperation between India and Bhutan. The group aims to promote dialogue, facilitate exchange of parliamentary practices, and encourage collaboration on issues of mutual interest.

Other members of the group include Kalaben Mohanbhai Delkar, Umesh Nath Balyogi, Rajabhau Parag Prakash Waje, Ajendra Singh Lodhi, Dr. Kirsan Namdeo, Lumbaram Choudhary, Bharat Singh Kushwah, Rajathi alias Salma, A.D. Singh, and Chh Udayanraje Bhonsle, representing both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The formation of the group underscores India’s continued commitment to nurturing its close and friendly ties with Bhutan through structured parliamentary interactions. By fostering regular exchanges and constructive dialogue, the Friendship Group is expected to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between the two neighbouring nations during the tenure of the 18th Lok Sabha.
