Gaborone, November 12 :
Botswana President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko on Wednesday hailed India as the “mother of democracy” and praised New Delhi’s role as a steadfast partner in Botswana’s development journey. Welcoming President Droupadi Murmu to Gaborone, he lauded her efforts in promoting education, gender equality, and the upliftment of marginalized communities. This visit marks the first-ever State Visit from India to Botswana, and the first hosted by Botswana since President Boko assumed office last year — underscoring the depth of bilateral relations.

During their one-to-one and delegation-level talks, both leaders agreed to expand cooperation in key areas, including trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, health, education, skill development, defence, and digital technology. President Murmu emphasized that the visit is a milestone in India-Botswana ties, especially as the two nations approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026.

A key highlight of the meeting was Botswana’s decision to assist India in the next phase of ‘Project Cheetah’, aimed at restoring cheetahs to India’s ecosystems. President Murmu expressed gratitude to President Boko and the people of Botswana for their support in this unique wildlife conservation initiative.

The two leaders also witnessed the signing of an agreement on pharmacopoeia, enabling access to affordable, high-quality Indian medicines in Botswana. Additionally, India announced the supply of essential ARV medicines at Botswana’s request.

In a special gesture, President Boko personally welcomed President Murmu at the airport, where she received a ceremonial guard of honour. During her visit, the Indian President will address Botswana’s National Assembly, meet the Indian community, and visit cultural and historical sites — further deepening the long-standing friendship between India and Botswana.
