Dharmanagar, June 21: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Dharmanagar police arrested a 23-year-old youth on Saturday afternoon while he was allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin to Agartala by train. The accused, identified as Salman Hossain, is a resident of Ward No. 2 under Bhagyapur Gram Panchayat.

Acting on a tip-off from confidential sources, the police team intercepted Hossain near Ward No. 22, in close proximity to the Dharmanagar railway station. Upon conducting a thorough search, authorities recovered 55 grams of heroin hidden inside five soap cases. The seized narcotics are estimated to have a black market value of approximately ₹5.5 lakh.

The operation was led by SDPO B. Jurin Puiya and Officer-in-Charge Smriti Kanta Bardhan, with support from a team of forensic experts from Kailashahar. Deputy Collector Amar Chand Biswas was also present during the raid, ensuring administrative oversight.

Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Salman Hossain is scheduled to be produced before the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court on Sunday.

Authorities suspect that Hossain may be part of a larger drug trafficking network operating across the region. Further investigations are currently underway to trace the source of the contraband and identify any additional individuals involved in the smuggling racket.

This successful operation underscores the Tripura Police’s continued commitment to curbing the illegal drug trade and maintaining public safety. Law enforcement agencies have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may aid in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
