Agartala, July 22: A tragic road accident in Tripura’s Unakoti district claimed the life of Bishwajit Debbarma (32), a young advocate of the Kailashahar Bar Association, late on Tuesday night, while alleged lapses at a hospital morgue triggered widespread criticism.
According to police, Debbarma, a resident of Nepal Tilla, was riding his motorcycle when it collided head-on with a Bolero vehicle loaded with pineapples near Betchara. He sustained critical injuries and was initially taken to Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Hospital before being referred to Kailashahar District Hospital. As his condition deteriorated further, he was shifted to North Tripura District Hospital in Dharmanagar, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The sudden death of the young lawyer has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity in Kailashahar. Colleagues, relatives and well-wishers gathered at the hospital to pay their last respects, describing his demise as a major loss to the legal community.
Local MLA Paul Dangshu, reportedly a childhood friend of the deceased, also visited the hospital to console the bereaved family.
Dharmanagar Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident. Officials said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and further details will emerge after forensic analysis and statements from eyewitnesses.
The incident took a controversial turn after family members and lawyers alleged serious negligence at the hospital morgue. They claimed no staff members were present to receive the body, forcing relatives to unlock the mortuary and switch on the air-conditioning system themselves to preserve the remains.
The allegations have sparked outrage, with members of the legal fraternity and local residents demanding accountability from the health authorities. The tragedy has also renewed calls for stricter road safety measures and improved emergency healthcare services to prevent similar incidents in the future.
