Agartala: Sept 28: Tension gripped the Brahma Bari area of Udaipur after unidentified miscreants desecrated a Durga idol inside a pandal late on Saturday night. The incident, which occurred just days ahead of the main festivities, has left locals shocked and outraged.
According to members of the Puja organising committee, volunteers had remained at the pandal site until around 2 a.m., after which the vandalism is believed to have taken place. “The incident likely occurred in the early hours after our volunteers had left. It is deeply unfortunate and seems like a deliberate attempt to disturb communal harmony,” said one committee member.
The organisers strongly condemned the act, describing it as a conspiracy aimed at creating communal unrest and disrupting the prevailing peace in the region.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Gomati District, Kiran Kumar K, along with a police team, rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The officials interacted with local residents and assured them of swift and strict action against those responsible.
“Some parts of the idol were damaged by the miscreants. As part of our special security arrangements for Durga Puja, CCTV cameras have been installed at all major pandals, including this one. We are closely examining the footage to identify the perpetrators,” SP Kumar stated.
The police have intensified surveillance in and around the area to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain communal peace. Meanwhile, the local community has appealed for calm and urged people not to fall prey to rumours or provocations. Authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to bring the culprits to justice and ensure a peaceful celebration of the festival.
