Agartala, Sept 3: Tripura has taken another step towards modernising its transport and tourism infrastructure with the launch of app-based cab services by Uber and a Tourism Information Centre at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala.

The initiatives were formally inaugurated on Thursday by Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who described the development as an important move towards making the state more accessible, modern and tourist-friendly.

The launch also extended beyond the airport. Through a virtual link, Agartala Railway Station and Jogendranagar Railway Station were connected to the new app-based cab service, allowing passengers at all three major transport hubs to access the facility.

The introduction of app-based transportation is expected to provide passengers with a more convenient and transparent travel option. Visitors and residents arriving at the airport or railway stations can book cabs through their mobile phones, reducing the need to search for transport after arrival.

The service is also expected to minimise difficulties associated with last-minute transport arrangements and provide passengers with greater clarity over fares and booking details. The government believes that improved connectivity at key entry points will contribute to a smoother travel experience for tourists as well as local residents.

Alongside the cab service, the newly launched Tourism Information Centre at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport is expected to serve as a support point for visitors arriving in Tripura. The centre will provide information and guidance on tourist destinations, accommodation options and local attractions, helping travellers plan their visits more effectively.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the government is committed to developing Tripura as a modern, safe and tourist-friendly state by making greater use of digital technology.

He said the initiatives are aimed not only at improving passenger convenience but also at strengthening the state’s tourism ecosystem. Better transport facilities and easy access to tourism-related information, he added, would make travelling within Tripura more convenient and could encourage more visitors to explore the state.

The government expects the integration of digital transport services with major travel gateways to create a more seamless experience for tourists from across the country and abroad.

The initiative marks another effort to combine technology with public services and tourism infrastructure, with the broader objective of improving connectivity, passenger convenience and Tripura’s appeal as a travel destination.
