Agartala: May 22: Tripura is poised to become the third state in India to be officially declared a ‘fully literate state’, joining the ranks of Goa and Mizoram in a significant milestone for the nation’s educational progress.

The announcement will be made by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Education portfolio, during a formal ceremony on Monday at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala. The event, organized by the School Education Department, will witness the participation of Special Education Secretary Raval Hamendra Kumar, senior officials, and over 2,000 neo-literates, volunteers, instructors, and block-level functionaries from all eight districts of the state.

Tripura’s achievement is the result of rigorous implementation of the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram (New India Literacy Programme), a centrally sponsored initiative aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This flagship adult education mission was launched to identify and educate non-literate individuals across the country.

The ULLAS programme focuses on five key components: Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Critical Life Skills, Basic Education, Vocational Skills, and Continuing Education. By addressing both academic and practical life skills, the programme aims to empower adult learners to participate more effectively in society.

Officials credit the collaborative efforts of instructors, local volunteers, and block-level teams for the successful implementation of the programme across Tripura’s diverse regions. Their work has played a crucial role in bringing education to the grassroots, ensuring that even the most remote communities benefit from literacy initiatives.

This milestone not only marks a proud moment for Tripura but also sets a benchmark in India’s broader mission for universal education and lifelong learning.
