For many, retirement signals the end of a lifelong career. For Pratima Pal, however, it marked the beginning of a new journey dedicated entirely to selfless service. Fourteen years after retiring as a government schoolteacher, she continues to teach students every day without accepting any remuneration, setting an extraordinary example of commitment to education.

A former teacher of PM Shri Baidyadighi Higher Secondary School in Bishalgarh subdivision, Pratima Pal retired from government service in 2012 after decades of teaching. Instead of bidding farewell to the classroom, she returned to the school the very next day as a voluntary teacher. Since then, she has been offering free classes to students with the same passion and dedication that defined her professional career.

As of June 29, 2026, Pal has completed 14 uninterrupted years of voluntary teaching, earning admiration from colleagues, students, and the wider community. Her unwavering commitment has made her a symbol of service and an inspiration for educators across Tripura.

Pratima Pal began her teaching career in 1980 as a Graduate Teacher at Shalgara Town Girls’ High School before later serving at PM Shri Baidyadighi Higher Secondary School, where she eventually retired. Despite completing her official tenure, she believes that the responsibility of a teacher extends far beyond retirement.

“Teaching is not just a profession for me; it is my life’s purpose. As long as my health allows, I will continue to teach students voluntarily. Their achievements and success are the greatest rewards I can receive,” she said.

Teacher-in-Charge of PM Shri Baidyadighi Higher Secondary School, Uttam Chakraborty, praised her remarkable dedication, describing her as a rare inspiration.

“Very few people continue serving society with such commitment after retirement. Madam Pratima Pal’s voluntary service for the past 14 years reflects her deep love for education and her selfless spirit. She motivates both teachers and students alike,” he said.

Students, too, hold her in high regard. “She explains even the most difficult subjects with patience and care. She is more than a teacher to us—she is like a guardian,” one student said.

Pratima Pal’s remarkable journey demonstrates that true teachers never retire. Her unwavering dedication to nurturing young minds without expecting anything in return continues to inspire generations, proving that the greatest contribution to society often comes through selfless service.
