Agartala, Dec 27: With the large-scale rollout of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura’s solar power generation capacity is poised to cross 10 megawatts (MW) by March 2026, marking a significant milestone in the state’s renewable energy journey, a senior official said on Saturday.

Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu said the state has already crossed the 6 MW mark under the flagship rooftop solar scheme, reflecting strong public participation and growing awareness about clean energy. He described solar power as no longer just a natural resource, but a symbol of development, self-reliance and sustainable growth for Tripura.

Speaking to the media, Basu expressed confidence that the state would comfortably surpass the 10 MW target by March next year, driven by an unprecedented response from electricity consumers across Tripura. So far, 17,131 consumers have registered under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, while rooftop solar installations have been completed on 1,762 households. These rooftops have effectively turned into mini power stations, collectively generating around 6 MW of electricity daily.

Highlighting the financial benefits of the scheme, Basu said consumers are not only meeting their own electricity needs but are also earning by selling surplus power back to the state utility. Already, 187 consumers have earned a total of Rs 53,514 through the sale of excess solar energy, with the amount credited directly to their bank accounts.

He noted that the initiative has transformed solar energy from being merely an eco-friendly option into a practical source of household income, while also helping reduce electricity bills to nearly zero.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Government of India in February 2024, is the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative. With an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the scheme aims to provide rooftop solar power to one crore households by March 2027, reshaping India’s energy landscape and promoting a cleaner, greener future.
