Agartala, July 30: The investigation into the sudden death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar has entered a crucial phase, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government reaching New Delhi to carry forward the probe.

The SIT’s visit to the national capital marks a significant expansion of the investigation beyond Tripura as officials seek to gather evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the state’s top police officer.

The investigation team is headed by Superintendent of Police (West) Namit Pathak and comprises senior officers from different wings of the Tripura Police. Among those already in New Delhi are Inspector Rana Chatterjee, Women Inspector Shiuli Das and Sub-Inspector Subendu Das, who have been assigned specific responsibilities as part of the investigation.

The SIT was constituted following a government order issued on July 25, directing a “thorough, coordinated and expeditious investigation” into West Agartala Police Station Unnatural Death Case No. 2026WAG045, registered on July 20 under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The investigation team also includes Additional SP (Urban) Dhruba Nath, Additional SP (AN) Souvik De, Deputy SP Benjamin Dewan of the Cyber Crime Police Station, Inspector Bhaskar Saha, along with other experienced officers entrusted with examining different aspects of the case.

According to sources, the Delhi leg of the investigation will focus on collecting documentary and digital evidence, questioning individuals connected with the case and examining all possible circumstances surrounding Dhankhar’s final days. Investigators are also expected to scrutinise official communications, professional engagements and personal interactions to determine whether any external factors may have contributed to the incident.

The death of a serving Director General of Police has drawn widespread attention across administrative and law enforcement circles, making the investigation one of the most closely watched cases in the state. The SIT’s findings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the next course of action.

Officials have reiterated that the investigation is being conducted in a fair, impartial and time-bound manner. They maintained that the objective is to establish the facts based on evidence and ensure that the investigation reaches a logical conclusion with complete transparency and credibility.

The Delhi operation is being viewed as a critical stage in the ongoing probe, with investigators hopeful that the evidence collected will help uncover the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of Tripura’s senior-most police officer.
