Agartala, Nov 13 — As 2025 draws to a close, the countdown for Tripura’s urban local body elections has already begun, with the five-year term of the current representatives nearing its end. The upcoming polls will cover all municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats across the state — including the Melaghar Municipal Council and Sonamura Nagar Panchayat under Sonamura subdivision.

With elections approaching, political activity has intensified at both local and state levels. Many incumbent councillors, elected or nominated during the 2021 civic polls, are keen to retain their posts, while a new wave of aspirants has entered the fray, seeking to secure party nominations.

Party insiders revealed that lobbying for tickets is already underway, with councillors reaching out to senior leaders for support. At the same time, emerging candidates are making their presence felt through extensive outreach and self-promotion campaigns. Political observers note that the race for nominations has become increasingly competitive, marked by subtle rivalries and backroom manoeuvres.

Public opinion in Melaghar and Sonamura remains divided over the performance of the current civic bodies. While some residents commend their development initiatives, others accuse them of corruption, favoritism, and misuse of public resources. Reports suggest that certain aspirants are attempting to undermine sitting councillors by highlighting alleged irregularities and fund mismanagement.

Adding to the intrigue, a few former Left-aligned activists have reportedly switched allegiance to the ruling camp, further reshaping local political equations.

With months still to go before polling day, Melaghar and Sonamura have already emerged as early battlegrounds for political influence. As one observer remarked, “The real contest has started long before the ballots are cast.”
