Agartala, June 6: A day after World Environment Day, Tripura marked a significant step towards sustainable energy adoption with the inauguration of a 40-kilowatt peak (kWp) grid-connected rooftop solar power plant at Raj Bhavan in Agartala. Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu inaugurated the facility on Friday, making the Governor’s residence one of the first constitutional buildings in the state to operate entirely on renewable energy.

The ₹30 lakh project was funded by a renewable energy development company based in Odisha and implemented by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA). The plant is expected to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of the Raj Bhavan, setting an example for other government institutions and private establishments to transition from conventional electricity to clean, sustainable power.

Speaking at the event, Governor Nallu emphasized the importance of adopting solar energy, noting the steady decline in installation costs due to supportive government policies. He urged both citizens and institutions to utilize central schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides subsidies for rooftop solar systems, enabling households to save on electricity bills while contributing to a greener future.

“Solar energy isn’t just environmentally sustainable; it’s also economically smart. It can significantly reduce dependence on grid power and provide reliable electricity in remote or off-grid areas,” the Governor said.

He also highlighted the role of self-help groups (SHGs) in setting up community-level solar installations and solar-powered irrigation systems—particularly beneficial for rural agriculture.

This green initiative aligns with India’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. With the commissioning of the Raj Bhavan solar plant, Tripura reinforces its commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
