Agartala, June 12: Bagma Agri Producer Company Limited in Tripura’s Gomati district is emerging as a successful example of local value addition in agriculture by processing and marketing filtered mustard oil sourced from locally procured mustard seeds, officials said.

The initiative, launched during 2021-22, has created a sustainable market linkage for mustard growers while generating additional income through the sale of by-products. The company began operations using an oil extraction machine provided by the Agriculture Department under the guidance of the then Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer of Matabari Agricultural Subdivision.

According to officials, the producer company regularly procures mustard seeds from farmers in Udaipur, Chandrapur, Sabroom, Amarpur and Boxanagar. Procurement takes place every 15 to 16 days, with farmers receiving between Rs 65 and Rs 70 per kilogram of mustard seeds.

The seeds are processed using an oil extraction machine without the addition of preservatives or artificial additives, ensuring the production of pure filtered mustard oil. On average, the processing unit extracts around 42 litres of mustard oil daily.

The finished product is marketed through both online and offline channels. While most sales are currently generated through advance offline orders, the company has also begun expanding its digital presence through the MyStore platform. Officials said online sales have shown steady growth in recent months.

The filtered mustard oil is currently sold at Rs 260 per litre. In addition to oil production, the processing unit generates mustard cake, a valuable by-product widely used in agriculture and fisheries. The mustard cake is sold at Rs 50 per kilogram and has become an important secondary source of revenue for the enterprise.

Officials said growing consumer demand has resulted in orders from various parts of Tripura, reflecting increasing acceptance of the locally produced oil.

The company believes that additional support in infrastructure development, modern machinery, marketing and market linkage could significantly expand production capacity and create more livelihood opportunities for rural households.

The initiative is contributing to strengthening local agro-based industries, enhancing farmers’ incomes and promoting rural economic development through value-added agricultural processing in Tripura.
